Cara
I sat on the dead grass. The weight of what Apollo had told me crushed me. He hadnât reacted to my slap. Heâd merely brushed at that spot, as if it were the light graze of a leaf. I would have preferred it if heâd gotten mad. He gestured for me to sit after, so he might explain what I was to go through.
âYou have to do this,â Apollo said. âThereâs no other option.â
âWhy?â I asked, feeling like I was about to explode.
âThe old gods need another anchor to return. Otherwise, theyâll have to use the powers Iâve injected into this world, disintegrating everything, before they can assume their physical bodies again. Youâre the answer.â
âYou want me to be the next chiasma.â I swallowed thickly. âHow the fuck does that even work?â I gestured to my body. âLook at me.â
âYou look glorious, Cara.â He said it with so much conviction that I got chills.
âI mean, yeah,â I said. My new goddess body was awesome. âBut thatâs not what Iâm getting at. Iâm not anything like the chiasma. Itâs a giant black ball, for fuckâs sakes. And to anchor the world?â
âYou wonât be doing it alone.â Apollo grabbed my hand. Was he trying to give me reassurance? It wasnât working. âIâll be giving you some of my powers. I wouldnât be able carry this out with anybody else, but since your body acclimated to the chiasmaâs powers for so long, itâs attuned to it. I want to give you more of my energy. Itâll weaken me, but itâll also keep the worlds alive. In the current states.â
âAnd then what?â
âWe finish the same ritual we used thousands of years ago. The same one they used on me.â
âSacrifice.â
âWill you do it?â Apollo asked. âYou will have to volunteer for this position sincerely.â
âYou want me to spend the rest of eternity as a giant-ass orb.â I sucked in a breath. My ears rang. âWhatâs the alternative?â
âThe old gods wonât stand aside and lose their opportunity to return,â Apollo said. âNyx will destroy the worlds without another option. Everything youâve ever known would be replaced.â
âEverything,â I said in an almost-whisper.
Apollo bowed his head in a morose fashion.
My vassals.
Danna.
Theyâd be gone.
âDo you love them?â Apollo asked. I hadnât mentioned my vassals, but Apollo saw through my thoughts.
The burden weighed heavily in my chest. âYes.â
âIf you truly did,â Apollo said, âyouâd give yourself up for them. Like I did for Nyx. I care for my friend. We went through much together. And so, when the time came, I willingly sacrificed my own form to give her another chance. Wouldnât you do the same?â
I looked at my hands. The wind no longer lessened the punishing heat of Apolloâs sun, but my fingers had gone cold. âI donât know.â I clenched my jaw. âI really donât know.â
